Turmeric- A Boon to Our Health

Turmeric is a type of spice derived from the turmeric plant. It is frequently used in Asian food. Turmeric powder is the main spice used in curry. It has a bitter taste, warm and is popularly used to flavour or colour curry powders, butter, mustards, and cheeses. Roots of turmeric are also used widely to make medicine. Turmeric contains a yellow-coloured substance known as curcumin, which is mainly used to colour foods and cosmetics. Turmeric is commonly used for conditions involving inflammation and pain, such as osteoarthritis. It is also used for hay fever, diabetes, high cholesterol, depression, a type of liver disease, and itching.  According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, more than 30 million Americans have diabetes and out of which 90% to 95% are suffering from type 2 diabetes.

To enrich the market position of turmeric, the key players are now focusing on adopting strategies such as product innovations, recent developments, mergers & acquisitions, joint venture, partnership, and collaborations.

  • For instance, in April 2019, Lipofoods SLU launched Curcushine™ microcapsules. It's bioavailable microencapsulated curcumin for the beauty-from-within market. This product is naturally prepared with high solubility when dissolved in water. It has a neutral taste and can be readily incorporated into beauty drinks and Nutri-cosmetics.
  • In 2018, Waker AG launched two products which are applicable for sports nutritional supplements. One among them is CAVACURMIN that contains curcumin which is a plant-based antioxidant. It is propelling up the bioavailability considerably and highly adopted to incorporate them into a variety of products used by athletes.
  • The Indian company, Konark Herbals and Health Care are making its mark in the global curcumin marketplace. Wide variety of standardized herbal extracts are manufactured by them. It provides the most promising herbal product named curcumin which is anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, helpful in healing the injuries.
  • Chr. Hansen Holding A/S recently launched NUTRIPHY curcumin with better bioavailability of active curcuminoids to traditional curcumin.
